The sportive home of top science

The University of Jyväskylä is known not only as a leading higher education provider in sports science and education but also for excellence in other sciences. The story of the university began with the first ever Finnish-language teacher training seminar, established by Uno Cygnaeus in 1863.

The main campus, Seminaarinmäki, is the oldest campus of the university. Often hailed as the most beautiful campus in Finland, it is known for its architectural design by Alvar Aalto. Seminaarinmäki is a famous example of how old building stock can be harmoniously complemented with modern infill construction. The campus is listed by the National Board of Antiquities as nationally significant built heritage.

The Faculty of Information Technology located on Mattilanniemi campus is the largest and oldest of its kind in Finland. The teaching of information technology started in Jyväskylä in 1967.

At the lakeside science campus Ylistönrinne, students and researches work on latest achievements of science, such as nanotechnology. It houses a particle accelerator that is mainly for basic research in nuclear physics.
